To me, there are:

  1. “Good exercising songs,”

  2. And then there are songs so good, so fast, so intense, they trigger the same surge of adrenaline that lets a mother lift a car to save her child.

I would not call myself a fast runner. And you know what? I wouldn’t even call myself a good runner. But when I finish any form of cardio, I want to feel like I’ve accomplished something. It’s important to me that I walk away knowing I pushed myself and was uncomfortable. Even if it was just for thirty seconds.

Because of this, I spend 90% of my runs doing what you could call “bullshitting” or “not good running.” Then, when I decide I’ve only got 5 to 10 minutes left in me, I turn to a playlist I’ve had for years called “Run fast, bitch,” and I dedicate those final minutes to sprinting and pushing my body as hard as it can go. I’m sweating, spitting, swearing—feeling like that one famous photo of the marathoner who pooped his pants.

This playlist:

  • Contains songs all with a high BPM (with an exception or two).

  • Has 96 good songs. It’s not just the BPM that turns me into a bionic woman—it’s that these songs are so good, and I have so much fun listening to them, that I feel like I could run through a brick wall.

  • Has made me throw up more than once.

Hold on, my lawyer is telling me to make this disclaimer: ignore the title of this playlist, and please be kind to yourself. This playlist is not meant to be a punitive experience.
